Gyeongju

Today was an early start- we woke at 5:00am for a five hour drive towards Gyeongju. We arrived before noon and climbed up to a temple high on a mountain called Bulgaksa Temple. We explored the courtyards in the blistering heat and extreme humidity. The temple was composed of multiple courtyards, Bonjonbul (Buddha statues), a massive bell, two statues (one is featured on a Korean coin) and many other interesting sights.
After stopping for lunch, we drove up a windy mountain, looking over the edge down the steep drop. After driving to the top, we were met by an even larger bell on a platform that overlooked a vast valley and surrounding mountains. We proceeded to climb up a number of uneven stairs and then a long walk on a path to Seokguram. At the end of the path, another Buddha statue was featured, as well as frames that held up many lanterns. After the long trek back down, we returned to the bell platform where I had the chance to ring the bell. It was actually really hard to push the mallet! The ringing was so loud and invaded into my ears, numbing all surrounding sounds.
After dinner and a rest at our hotel, we went back out to see the remnants of a palace called Anapji Pond. Around the palace, the ruler at the time created a man-made lake to support a number of foreign wildlife and plant species. Most of the site was grass with concrete circles on the ground representing sections of the palace. When it became dark, lights showcased the remaining structures as well as pathways and miniature waterfalls, setting a peaceful mood.
We returned to the hotel and watched the only English channel. Ghost Whisperer was on. It was interesting…
